How often to change filter medium?

Matthew RJ

  • #ane
I have a 30 gallon, and an aquaclear seventy (formerly 300). I used to change a different filter insert once a month. Then one time I asked at the LFS (which I commonly trust for good communication) they said just the carbon insert monthly and the others as needed.

Did I get good advice?

I'd say that's pretty sound advice. I go up to half dozen months, sometimes longer betwixt irresolute my filter media. *Edit: And by irresolute usually that'south just a skilful rinse off with tank h2o then back into my filter. I've had my tanks running for shut to 2 years now and still apply the same filter media*

Equally for carbon I personally don't use it but I have heard that it does need changing more regularly.

Thanks!

Why don't you use carbon? I remember when I was treating for disease, the carbon came out. When I had to re-start the tank and did a massive cleaning, extra carbon went in.

I only don't think it'due south necessary (especially if y'all practise regular water changes)unless y'all use information technology to clear meds from treated water once fish accept recovered.

Carbon filters medication from the h2o which is why you take it out to treat water and then put it back in afterwoods.

Carbon besides removes odors and discoloration in the water. Theres a lot of other benefits only these are the principal ones. I personally don't use it unless my water starts to stink.

I'd say you got some pretty decent advice. The carbon needs to be changed every iii weeks or so, depending on your stocking level.

Any other filter media should simply be rinsed once a month. You practice that when you're taking used water out of the tank during a water modify. Remove the filter media and swish it around in the saucepan of dirty tank water then put it back in the filter. It shouldn't need to be replaced until it starts to fall apart.

Washing the filter media with water from the tank - I've heard of this but I use a python hose that dumps the water in the sink.

You should definitely rinse filter media out with tank water so you don't destroy the established beneficial bacteria that colonises in the media.

If you rinse under tap water the chlorine will kill off the beneficial leaner and potentially destroy your tanks cycle.

It'southward not hard to siphon out some tank water into a bucket and rinse filter media in there. Just make sure the bucket had not been used with detergents or other chemicals of grade

I utilise a python hose too. I dip out a trivial water to rinse the filter media. I take some sponges that accept been going for well over a twelvemonth.

I retrieve your lfs has given you some good advice.

Yous don't need to alter out the sponge unless it'due south falling apart or doesn't cleanup as well. Your biomax shouldn't need irresolute for quit awhile. The surfaces do kickoff to get gunked upwards. Never alter out all media at the same time.

As long as the water you use for rinsing is dechlorinated it doesn't affair if it'due south tank water or fresh water. I for 1 fill up a bucket or two with fresh make clean water not too cold, add some water conditioner and abroad I become!

I don't utilize activated carbon either. You just fill the space with filter floss or another sponge etc. I have yet to change out any filter media in my canister on my largest tank and that has been running for over a year. The sponges look like new or just discolored a petty. It's a huge canister. lol Aforementioned goes for the canister on the other tank. I merely rinse them out when needed.

Proficient morning,

I have filter media more than 10 years old. Equally mentioned above, apply your filter media until it is falling apart. Never replace all of your filter media at once.

Likewise, I rinse my filter media in siphoned tank water every month or and then or if and when I meet a reduced flow from my filters. However, I as well use filter floss (loftier loft batting material 100% poly from the craft section at WalMart) in all of my filters. This floss I exercise not depend on for housing beneficial bacteria. I apply information technology to collect the largest amounts of fish waste and I replace information technology for fresh floss every five days. Removing the largest amounts of waste helps to continue the ammonia and nitrates where they need to be. I have a lot of other filter media to firm beneficial leaner so that I do not have to depend on this floss.

My ii cents on activated carbon : I'g a house believer that every freshwater aquarium should utilize it. Granted it is a personal selection and many members merely use information technology at sure times, if they use it all. I respect that and it'due south their determination.

I employ information technology effectually the clock in all of my tanks, changing it out every 3 weeks. I don't feel that carbon masks any issues but removes them equally long as you lot modify it out periodically. I alter mine every iii weeks for fresh. It absorbs minerals and organic substances, helps to proceed your water clear, eliminates foul odors. Information technology will also remove medications and discoloration in the water (caused by driftwood for an example). If you're running more than one filter on a tank, the carbon does non have to go into every filter only 1. I have v filters on my 265g and I only utilize it in i of them. The other filters you tin stuff full of skillful bio media. (sponges, ceramic cubes and tubes, bio assurance).

I've stopped proverb that the Activated Carbon (AC) leaches what it has collected back into the tank. There are people on both sides of the argue here. Instead I retrieve it's more authentic to say the the Air conditioning looses information technology effectiveness later on 3 to 4 weeks and it should be removed and replaced.

If your tank smells foul and so I highly recommend calculation it to your filter immediately. A water change would probably be a good idea likewise.

Ken

My tanks are crystal clear!

I have moved your thread from Cleaning and Maintenance to Filters and Filtration section of the forum.

Just reviewing quondam filter conversations and saw this thread. I'grand still having trouble thinking of leaving a sponge in for a twelvemonth.

I do change the Carbon once a calendar month, others as needed. But then I come across people here saying to go out it in for a year plus + yikes!!! My filter sponge starts to look nasty subsequently ii months.

The sponge gets rinsed out in used tank water which gets the grime out. Rinse and squeeze out the junk. I exit my sponge in until it's almost falling apart.

I have sponges the are over 3 years in apply. I rinse them at least once a month. And only supersede when they fall apart.

Activated carbon has 2 schools of thought. Use and supersede it monthly; or merely apply to remove meds or other impurities. I follow the later.

I'yard with Dena on this one, I only use the carbon when I have to, other than that I have rid all merely one of my tanks of it and that one will be done in the side by side month (I have to move the tank).

Y'all got great advice IMO and your fish will thank y'all for it.

I wash my sponges in tap water. Tap h2o does non sterilize the sponge, so the surviving bacteria tin recolonize it in curt order. I also take lots and lots of biomedia (no carbon), so I can replace the sponge without the tank skipping a beat. If I was so inclined.

I don't clean the media in the canisters very oft, simply my filtration systems are huge. Twice a twelvemonth probably.

The ACs get cleaned when the lid pops off. That happens mayhap 3 or 4 times a yr.
